Today, I was walking home from the trails – and I saw a beautiful varied thrush lying on the road. It was breathing heavily and seemed stunned, likely as the result of an accidental collision with a window. It was breathing heavily, but seemed to be just stunned. So, I helped remove it out of harms way, by carrying away from the street and placing it on the grass (using my gardening shovel). The beautiful bird is a distinctive native bird of BC, with its bright orange feathers and stripe on it’s head. I spent some time sitting beside it and keeping it company until it recovered from the collision and was able to fly away again. I felt blessed to have a little moment beside such a beautiful local bird. Reminds me why we do the invasive removal and native planting – to improve the habitat for such beautiful birds.
