On Thursday, June 20, in the lead up to our BioDIVERSITY event, 6 volunteers gathered at the Douglas Fir Teaching Garden for some collaborative chalk drawing!
We were inspired by the mandala art form and decided to make our art in concentric circles. We attached the end of a piece of chalk to a string of twine and drew 7 circles on the basketball court beside the garden.
Then, each volunteer artist selected a circle to decorate. They each designed a unique pattern to fill the space. At the centre, Anne desigend a swirling sun, radiating outword. For the next ring, Grace, used masking tape to mark off squares and coloured them in a rainbow pattern. Catherine, decided to add the element of water, so she filled the next ring with crashing waves and a calm blue ocean. Sylvia, inspired by nature, decided to fill a ring with multi-coloured flowers. Similarly, Genevieve, decided to create wavy, floral vines. On the last ring, Catherine (with the help of Linda), created a repeating pattern of leaves, with the leaf veins coloured in a variety of bright hues.
The chalk art was a great example of how beautiful things can be created when community comes together!
Special thank you to our volunteers: Anne, Catherine, Genevieve, Grace, Linda, and Sylvia.
