I was walking the trails and noticed a small douglas fir sapling tangled up in English Ivy. I made it my mission to free the fir! So on Saturday I and a fellow park steward, David Hiebert, helped to cut away the ivy and remove the roots around the fir. In the process we discovered one stump and 2 large rocks – which make great seats. We may consider this spot as a future Free the Fern meeting site along the trail. I went back today to the site and spread some leaf mulch around the base of the fir, to help retain moisture in the soil. Free the fir!
