We had a very successful Invasive Ed 101 event on Saturday, June 12.
Despite the forecast being 70% rain, we woke up to to beautiful sunny skies. Our members, Kiki, Anne, Grace and Paola were on hand to set up our info table, with waiver forms, rainbow tools and art for sale. Participants arrived in two waves in the morning at 10:00 am and 11:00 am for 50 minute sessions. While the afternoon sessions turned into a Free the Fern work party, with our members working together to remove more invasives.
Upon arrival, participants were welcomed by the friendly faces of Kiki and Paul, who managed the info table. Free the Fern members – Martin, Paola, Grace, Susan and Damian – served as teachers, instructing on best practices for removal of Invasive Ivy, Common Periwinkle and Himalayan Blackberry. During the event we succeeded in removing over 18 city green bins worth of invasives. Free the Fern will be using our Art for Plant Fundraiser to fund planting in the sections that have been cleared.
Thank you to all our great volunteer Free the Fern members for your dedication and hard work. Thank you also to all participants for your interest and enthusiasm at our event. We hope to see many of you out again at our future events!
