In Plot D within Doug’s Garden (see: projects page), we have completed removing all invasive plants (English Ivy, Italian Arum & Lamium) and we have covered the soil with a protective layer of leaf mulch. Leaf mulch has been collected in a wheelbarrow from along the Red Alder portion of the Champlain Heights Trail. This mulch will serve to add biodiversity to the soil as well as protect the soil from drying during the summer. On top of the leaf mulch we have spread a bed of aged fern fronds, collected from the underside of local sword ferns. We plan to plant sword ferns in this site in the fall of 2021.
