Our fellow Free the Fern member, Chris Corless, is not only good at getting ivy out with a rake, he also is a very talented woodworker. Over the last few days he has been working on a very special project that uses to his carpentry skills to reduce waste. At Kinross Creek Co-op there was a sad, abandoned wheelbarrow behind the landscaping shed, that had one handle missing (the wood had split and broken off), while the other handle was covered with fungi, the bucket was covered in rust and the tire was deflated. It looked like it was one step away from being sent to the garbage dump. But, when Chris saw it lying there, he saw potential. He had the skills and tools needed to bring this wheelbarrow back to life. So, he got a piece of wood, used his jigsaw to cut it, sanded it down and created a new handle. Then he painted the whole thing, replaced the wheel and now it has a new lease on life. This is a wheelbarrow with a lot of character, a good story, and made with lots of love. Who knows this could be the beginning of a Free the Fern partnership project to repair and refinish old gardening tools. Love it!
