I had one of the happiest, most satisfying moments in Doug’s Garden on the Champlain Heights Trail today. I was in the area of the garden that I hope to transform into a bed of ferns in the future. So, after removing invasive ivy in January on the site, I had placed a bed of leaf mulch and fern fronds. Well, today, while trying to pull out a few little weeds (lamium) that had sprouted up on the site, I noticed 3 little fiddle-heads (baby ferns) sprouting up from the soil. I was overcome with joy! This makes all the hours of pulling out ivy and pushing wheelbarrows of mulch to the site worth it! This is the forest regenerating itself! This is my vision for Free the Fern on the trails coming to life. So amazingly beautiful!
