Tonight, on December 19, 2021, we held a very successful, inaugural, Winter Solstice Lantern Procession on the Red Alder Trail. Originally, this event was scheduled for Winter Solstice, December 21, but due to a rainy forecast, we switched dates to tonight. It turned out to be a perfect night – with a clear view of the full moon and stars.
We had approximately 40 people participate, carrying a beautiful assortment of hand-made lanterns, many of which they had made during a workshop we held the previous weekend. Kiki on the glockenspiel, played classic Christmas tunes, leading the way into the Red Alder Trail. We entered the trail through Doug’s Garden, behind Kinross Creek Co-op, which was illuminated with paper bag lanterns. We then walked north up the Red Alder Trail, before looping back to return to Kinross Creek Co-op for hot chocolate and cookies. As everyone enyoyed their treats, we were entertained with lovely songs sung by Shannon Palm. Some impromptu Christmas caroling resulted, as many joined in the singing.
We hope to make this an annual tradition in our neighbourhood of Champlain Heights. It was a beautiful way to connect with those in the neighbourhood and celebrate the festive season.
A special thank you to Kinross Creek Social Committee and the Neighbourhood Small Grants for helping to fund this event.
