Outdoor Education

Today, I had the pleasure of taking out a class of grade 1/2 students from Champlain Heights Elementary for a walk down the Red Alder Trail, in the Champlain Heights Trail System.

We discussed the idea of “plant blindness” and how the cure for it is curiosity. We stopped at many points along the walk, and I encouraged the students to observe and ask questions about the plants they saw.

We explored a variety of invasive and native plants, including: paper birch tree, English holly, osoberry, tall Oregon grape, sword fern and others. Please find attached a pdf summary of our walk, “A Cure for Plant Blindness”.

  1. Amazing information 👌. I think it’s a wonderful & meaningful teaching moment for kids to learn about their own backyards & native plants. Hopefully these moments inspire them to be forever nature lovers & conservationists.
