On Sunday, April 10, 2022, Kinross Creek Housing Co-op, held a Spring Planting event. Thanks to support and consultation from Free the Fern director, Grace Nombrado, the Kinross Creek Landscape Committee was able to order 2 truck loads of soil (12 cu yards total) and 50 native plants to add to their public garden spaces.

Grace advised the co-op to order a variety of native plants, including those for shade and partial shade – sword fern, Oregon grape, salal, red columbine, Douglas Aster – and those for sun – coastal strawberry, mock orange, Douglas iris, woolly sunflower. Soil was delivered to the co-op by South West Garden Supply, and native plants were delivered by Nats Nursery in Langley. The native plants went into 4 public garden plots in the co-op.

There were 17 co-op residents on hand to help with moving soil via wheelbarrow and planting the native plants. The Kinross Creek Social Committee was also on hand to provide drinks and snacks for the hard working volunteers. The weather stayed surprisingly sunny for the planting event.
Great job Kinross Creek Co-op!

We hope that more co-ops in the area will consider native plants when landscaping their co-op. Free the Fern encourages other co-ops to reach out our expert stewards for advise when selecting native plants.
