Invasive Pull – Matheson Heights Co-op

Today, Saturday, February 5, 2022, Catherine Munn, hosted a successful Free the Fern Monthly Pull Event adjacent to Matheson Heights co-op along the Red Alder Trail.

11 volunteers (ranging in age from 8 years old to 60 years+) came to help remove English ivy that was engulfing the trees on the edge of the trail. We succeeded in removing 7 green bins (approximately 2,520L) worth of ivy. Some of the ivy stems were as thick around as an adult’s arm! Clearly, the ivy has been well established on the trail edge for over 10 years.

It was great to remove a large area of invasive weeds. With funds raised from our Art for Plant fundraiser, we will be able to do some native planting in the area this fall.

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers!

  1. I’d like to host another weed pull in the near future at Matheson heights, continuing eastward from where we had last weed pull.
